Surrender

Singapore surrendered 15th February 1942

In the above photo Cyril Wild, on the left, had thrown the White Flag of surrender down on the ground and it was picked up by a Japanese soldier.

Before the surrender ships, small boats and even canoes were used to escape Malaya and Singapore, not many being successful, many dying in the attempt. Sixty Argylls were captured after escaping Singapore in Sumatra or in Java.

Eight Argylls escaped Padang in the Dutch steamer, ‘Rooseboom’, which sailed for Ceylon. It was sunk nearing Ceylon, killing seven of the Argylls.

After Singapore surrendered, the Japanese gave instructions for the now PoWs to walk to Changi where a camp would be set up. The civilians were to be housed in the Changi Jail.

The walk from Tyersall to Changi was about 15 mile, but the Argylls still had some some cars left and used them to transport the Argylls to Changi accompanied by the pipers playing.

There was to follow three and a half years of hard labour induced by the Japanese with beatings if work was not carried out quickly enough. With barbaric treatment causing unnecessary deaths, these years were categorised by my father as a ‘Living Nightmare’.
